What Is Hypnotherapy?

hypnotherapy_bhairavayoga_1Hypnotherapy is a natural therapy, which uses hypnosis as a method for healing and transformation.

Although many people sustain misconceptions about hypnosis gleaned from TV or even cartoons from their childhood days, the hypnotic state is a totally natural state of mind. You could say that it is actually a complete state of relaxation. While under hypnosis, you will feel very relaxed, just like the wonderful feeling we have sometimes when we are tired and have found a perfect moment of rest, relaxing in a chair or bed with such comfort we’d like the moment to last forever...

Using simple hypnotic relaxation techniques, anyone can easily attain this state. In addition, with the help of a qualified hypnotherapist, it becomes easy to use visualization and positive suggestions to achieve health, become happier or more confident, stop smoking, heal sexual dysfunctions, remove fears or paranoia, and generally to bring beautiful changes to your life!

Many people claim that they have never been hypnotized or believe they cannot be hypnotized – that “it will not work” on them. However, most people will admit to having drifted off while thinking about someone special or forgetting large segments of a car journey (commonly known as the phenomenon of “highway hypnosis”), or simply “going somewhere else” while reading a book. These are all examples of natural trance states, since this response is a necessary function of our minds. One of the great things about hypnosis is that, while under the care of a qualified hypnotherapist, this trance state is achieved easily and is harmless, producing no negative side effects while providing positive therapeutic benefits.

What Does Hypnotherapy Involve?

Hypnotherapy is based on trust between a therapist and client. It is a process of healing that uses the power of the subconscious mind and it can be described as a professional partnership. It is important to understand that a person cannot be hypnotized unless he or she agrees and cooperates.

In addition, while someone is under hypnosis, no one can make that person do anything which he or she does not want to do. Those you may have seen under “stage hypnosis” on TV are people who chose to participate in a show with the clear intent to be hypnotized for entertainment purposes. In such circumstances, participants openly surrender themselves to a showman without any therapeutic motivation.

It’s also important to emphasize here that what hypnotherapists do is, by definition, therapeutic. Stage hypnosis is very different, existing solely as entertainment.

A Hypnotherapist's Job Is to Help People

hypnotherapy_bhairavayoga_2A hypnotherapy consultation usually involves an informal chat or interview with the therapist to identify and outline the nature of the issues or problems that need attention and to determine the necessary path for healing to overcome them. The next step involves using hypnosis to guide the client into a calm, relaxed meditative state of mind that will help them access the subconscious mind and begin to implement positive beneficial changes. You will feel that you are led, by means of the hypnotherapist's gently guiding voice, into a state in which your body and mind are relaxed and nearly asleep. To an onlooker it might seem as if you are totally asleep but in fact, though you will normally feel very relaxed, you will remain awake enough to be aware. Also awake will be those parts of your mind, which the therapist is working with to induce beneficial changes. This may mean that you will envision, as in a daydream, all that is being spoken of, and you may experience associated pleasant feelings.

Remember that if at any time you feel uncomfortable and want to terminate a session, you will be perfectly capable of doing so.

After a session of hypnosis ends, there is an opportunity to ask questions or discuss any experiences the client might have had during the relaxed hypnotic state.

The hypnotist merely helps you to use the incredible hidden powers of your subconscious mind for healing and to achieve beneficial changes in your life. Among hypnotherapy’s many successful applications are:

  • Addictions
  • Fears and paranoia
  • Past traumas
  • Sexual blockages or dysfunctions
  • Past life regression therapy
